iPhone 3G Q&A

A few days on, I have decided to write a Q&A with the most common questions from people with, and without iPhone 3G’s.

Is the iPhone 3G worth upgrading to from my old iPhone?

Yes, if you live in a 3G area, its a must, and its also a steal at only £99 ($199) - Hell, you can sell your old iPhone on eBay for £120 ($240) if you jailbreak it (Easy!) so really, apart from starting a new 18month contact, you will be better off, with around £20 extra, and a new iPhone with 3G.

Its a must. Really.

How can I tell if the battery is fully charged?

It seems a lot of people are googling this of late and being redirected to my iPhone 3G review, which cannot help you much, so I will make another post about it;

Battery charging is a strange business - Its one of those features that apple could have improved on, the truth is - The only way you can tell if your battery is fully charged is to “Lock” the iPhone (Push the Power Button) and then go to unlock it (Push the Home Button), you will be faced with a “Slide to Unlock” screen - And above that, is a picture of a battery - Its simple really, if the battery is fully green, and not glowing, its fully charged. if the battery is “glowing” that means its still charging.

The other way to tell, is it will be listed on iTunes if you connect up to charge that way, just look next to your iPhone in the iTunes listings.

How do I turn off the predictive text feature?

This is another of the iPhone’s flaws - You can’t. The only way you can cancel the change is to click the “x” next to the word its going to change it to.

I have to admit - After using the iPhone for a few days, I’ve got used to that feature, and am starting to like it, it corrects most of the spelling mistakes I make by clicking the wrong letter.

How do I used google maps for SatNav?

You can’t - Apple have not yet agreed to SatNav software for the iphone, yet companies like TomTom have already stated they are developing them.

The only way at the moment, is to have someone else follow google maps and read you the directions from the iPhone. Stay tuned for more updates on this tho.

Should I buy an iPhone from the CarPhoneWarehouse or an O2 store?

100% - O2 - The CarphoneWarehouse are still unsure about what the iPhone actually is, and what it includes. For example, I went in there the other day to check their stock for a friend, and they still think that the £35/month package does not include any Data allowance… They also said in the same breath, that unlimited data usage is an extra £7.50/month. Personally, I just think they want more money. Plus, their insurance is more expensive than O2.

O2 know what they are doing, and know the packages. And the CarPhoneWarehouse don’t have the greatest track record for customer satisfaction. Play it safe and go to O2

Can I clear a single SMS?

Again, another of the iPhones flaws - No, you can’t, you can only remove a single “Conversation” at a time, meaning, a group of messages at a time. If there is one you want to delete, but not the others, sorry, but its not possible.

Just to say - Even with these flaws, I still stand by my initial Review, its the best thing I’ve brought this year, it really is a great phone, and the advantages are much greater than the flaws.
